Dense fruit core of juicy melon and peach complemented by hints of ripe herbs and florals. Beautifully rounded with layer upon layer of texture, this wine has a long, complex finish with plenty of minerality, citrus, ripe stone fruit and an umami quality.

The grapes for this wine are from our certified-organic Woolshed vineyard on Loveblock Farm, in the Lower Dashwood sub-region of Marlborough Awatere Valley. The soil type is predominately aged alluvial loams containing some silt loam over stone. Dependent on vigour, the vines are pruned to two or three canes and trained in a normal vertical shoot position.

The stellar 2021 growing season delivered ideal flowering conditions, followed by a warm, dry summer, meaning that the grapes were picked in perfect condition. As vine vigour determines the crop load, the yield was an average of 9 tonnes per hectare. Harvest occurred in March.

No sulphur was used in the vineyard as per organic winemaking practices. Use of regenerative growth, manure and horn on the vineyard is employed to promote balanced, fertile soil, biodiversity and healthy grape growth in order to produce wine without the use of chemical pesticides, fungicides or additives of any kind.

About Loveblock Wines

At first I fell in love with the view. You can almost see the end of the earth from up there, but it is really only the hills behind Wellington on the horizon across the Cook Strait in New Zealand. It is the “quiet” and the feeling of space and air filling your lungs I fully love. The aura of peace and time.

Back in 2004, this was a wild piece of land, untamed and hidden from the world. We, Kim and I, have both been working in the wine industry for most of our lives and wondered what we could do with this wildness: how would the unique terroir translate to flavours in wine? Can we make wine that is elegant, restrained and complex? Wine that speaks of its place and a season.

Here in New Zealand land is precious; the economy largely depends on agriculture. As grape growers and wine farmers, we are custodians of this land. We must take care of it, restore soil balance and fertility without commercial fertilisers and chemical protection. We have learnt that the rhythm of the land is immovable, that we need to submit to it and respect it to get the best from it.

We want to make the best wine we can, wine that speaks with the voice of naked terroir. To do this I hired the best winemaker I know. Let me show you around Loveblock and introduce you to our people

Hancocks

The Hancocks name traces its origins back to 1859 when Thomas Hancock purchased the Captain Cook Inn in Khyber Pass Road Newmarket. Hancocks originally started life as a brewer and publican. The company went through many changes in its first 100 years, including the manufacture and distribution of spirits. Over the course of years the company changed names several times with the core of the company being the basis of what we now know as Lion.
