About Waipara Hills Wines

Here in the Waipara Valley we do everything with soul, creativity and heart – which means we put something of ourselves into all that we do. Waipara Hills is a reflection of our home in North Canterbury and its people.

At Waipara Hills our winemaking philosophy is simple. It’s about creating balance, encouraging the characteristics of each season’s fruit to shine, and celebrating the Waipara Valley vineyards. The result is wine that is rich, textural and complex.

From the vineyard to the winery, our team are hands on, pouring a little of themselves into what they do. Harvest signals the beginning of a new season, the chance to create wine that is distinctly Waipara Hills.

The Waipara Valley is cradled in the lee of the Teviotdale hills, which provide protection from the cool ocean winds but open to warm Nor’wester winds. The north facing, moderately sloping river terraces provide an ideal suntrap for grape ripening.

Abundant sunshine throughout the summer, combined with a long, dry and cool autumn helps produce unique concentrated Rieslings and Pinot Gris, our regional specialties. The Waipara Valley season is particularly long with bud burst starting in September and harvest sometimes lasting until mid May. Waipara receives 600mm of rainfall a year and on average seven hours of sunshine.

Hancocks

The Hancocks name traces its origins back to 1859 when Thomas Hancock purchased the Captain Cook Inn in Khyber Pass Road Newmarket. Hancocks originally started life as a brewer and publican. The company went through many changes in its first 100 years, including the manufacture and distribution of spirits. Over the course of years the company changed names several times with the core of the company being the basis of what we now know as Lion.
