Matawhero Single Vineyard Pinot Gris 2022 (6 Bottles) Gisborne

by Hancocks 0 orders

This delightful Pinot Gris is a full bodied wine with spice, pear, fig and honeysuckle notes. The wine is soft and voluptuous and finishes dry.

After another good growing season in Gisborne, the Pinot Gris grapes exhibited wonderful intense flavours and good aromatics. Once at optimal ripeness, the grapes for this wine were harvested in the cool of the morning and quickly transported to the winery for speedy processing.

After gentle pressing, the juice was kept cool and clarified slightly. Fermentation was carried out using cool temperatures as well, with a yeast perfectly suited to expressing the best characteristics of Pinot Gris.

This vibrant wine needed only the smallest adjustment prior to filtration to fully express the ripe flavours and aromas which has developed during the season.

About Matawhero Wines

The Matawhero journey started with two New Zealand wine pioneers from the 1960s. Today the story continues around the drive and determination of Kirsten and Richard Searle. who purchased the Matawhero vineyard and winery in Gisborne from Denis in 2008. They are the trusted Kaitiaki (guardians) of Matawhero and continue to develop the iconic winery and share the distinctive wine styles of the Tairawhiti-Gisborne region. They produce famous New Zealand Chardonnay and other wines including aromatics like Gewürztraminer and lovely Reds.

The Matawhero winery and vineyards in Gisborne were purchased by Kirsten and Richard Searle in 2008 from New Zealand pioneer winemaker Denis Irwin. After a rigorous process on Denis’s part to ensure that the baton was being passed to someone equally as passionate about wine and the region as he was, he willed us on and the hard work began replanting and revitalising the historic winery.

Their love of the region runs deep, Richard grew up here and with a family history of growing grapes they wouldn’t want to be doing anything else!

The Hancocks name traces its origins back to 1859 when Thomas Hancock purchased the Captain Cook Inn in Khyber Pass Road Newmarket. Hancocks originally started life as a brewer and publican. The company went through many changes in its first 100 years, including the manufacture and distribution of spirits. Over the course of years the company changed names several times with the core of the company being the basis of what we now know as Lion.
